OPERATION FITRAH

Operation Fitrah at SANZAF has begun in earnestness with the first of many truckloads of goods on its way to SANZAF's operational centre at the Bridgetown Masjid, Cornflower Street, Bridgetown.

The objective of Operation Fitrah is to ensure that every Muslim man, woman and child is free from want on the auspicious day of Eid.

In this regard, the goods in the form of groceries, chicken, and vegetables are earmarked for distribution to over 11,500 destitute and needy families

Planning for Operation Fitrah commences two months prior to Ramadhán. During this period, full-time staff and volunteers attend to referrals, interview applicants, conduct home visits, assess needs and update records.  A caseload of over 11,500 families is managed by SANZAF staff.

SANZAF Western Cape must raise at least R1,5 million to assist needy families in the Cape Peninsula, Boland, Garden Route and West coast areas.

DO YOU NOT PONDER OVER THE BEAUTY OF QURAN?

“A falaa yata dab’ba roel’qur’an” – ‘Do you not ponder over the beauty of the Qur’an?’ The words of this Ayah refers to the questioning of the human being's reflection over the Heavenly words of Almighty Allah. In the same breath one should take into consideration the socio-economic challenges that societies are forced to face. The on-going battle to survive and make ends meet has exhausted the need for us as humans to have compassion and mercy for each other. It is in light of this that we should seriously reflect on the above mentioned Ayah and consider when Allah Almighty questions us by saying; “Then which of the favours of your Lord do you deny?'

SOME OF OUR PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES ...

Massive Operation Fitrah begins in earnestness

This Ramadhán SANZAF is positioned to reach new milestones in the course of a dramatic year of social welfare and relief work challenges. In Ramadhán, SANZAF distributes Fitrah hampers in its Operation Fitrah on behalf of 140 mosques and social welfare organisations and institutions to over 60,000 destitute and needy individuals. This year the stipulated Fitrah amount is R26Fidyah is set at a minimum of R13 per person per day.

SANZAF appeals for R1.5 million to feed over 11,500 families on the day of Eid.

Help us build a school!

The Nqileni Village in the Eastern Cape is, according to Statistics SA, located in the poorest area in the country. The community has no road, no running water, no clinic, no electricity and no ablution facilities. It once had a humble school building but this collapsed in December 2007.

Because of SANZAF’s commitment to helping the poor, we have partnered with this project to help build a rural school of excellence, Insha-Allah.

Construction has already begun on an environmentally-friendly building, creating employment for the local community, and giving hope to the learners who are currently taught outside, without desks, chairs or shade. Now we need your help!

Xenophobia activities test SANZAF's resolve

The attacks on foreign nationals and flood relief work, in addition to the usual programmes like Operation Winter Warmth has placed new demands on SANZAF’s resources and its focus on core as opposed to auxiliary activities.

Youngsfield Military Base

Extraordinary measures were undertaken to support the refugees at Youngsfield Military Base where between 618 and 1200 persons were fed since May 2008. SANZAF wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Kenwyn community who laid the foundation for a smooth entry to Youngsfield. May Allah (SWA) reward them abundantly, Ameen, Insha Allah.

Harmony Park, Strand

SANZAF was tasked with the responsibilty of feeding over 200 Muslims. During the month of Ramadaan SANZAF provided both Iftaar and Suhoor meals on a daily basis. Sunday 21 September 2008 saw a special Iftaar treat arranged for these victims of xenophobia. A similar treat was afforded those accomodated at Youngsfield Military Base two weeks earlier.

SANZAF Stamper Damper (Disaster Relief)

SANZAF responds to disasters such as fires and floods in order to support those worst affected by these conditions. The relief aid includes food, clothing and blankets, and in some cases building materials to reconstruct dwellings. Additional support services include conventional as well as spiritual counselling for loss in such cases.

Providing humanitarian aid across a broad spectrum of the Western Cape for the past 34 years has been a challenging and daunting task for SANZAF. The experience gained as well as the public support has allowed the organization to develop an infrastructure to be able to provide this public service. In recognition of its services SANZAF has been recognized by the Department of Social Services as a full-time legitimate service provider to the Disaster Management of the City of Cape Town.

Educational & Empowerment Assistance

SANZAF has an Education and Empowerment Fund to assist needy and deserving students with sustained support over an entire academic programme. To date SANZAF has supported thousands of students in diverse fields and in a variety of institutions both nationally and internationally. These graduates have been empowered to support not only their own families, but also to make a meaningful contribution to the broader society.

Skills Development Project

SANZAF does not provide hand-outs without investigation of legitimate needs and accountability to the donor. Financial and material assistance may meet the immediate needs of the destitute, but it may also cause the recipient to become dependent on charity. This is why SANZAF involves recipients in development and empowerment programmes.

At least 30% of SANZAF’s annual income is allocated to empowerment, development, educational funding and skills training programmes with the aim of helping recipients to become self-sufficient.

Food Fair with a touch of health

Friday, 25 and Saturday, 26 April 2008

Ensuring sufficient funding for sustainable projects and programmes is always a priority/ concern for non-profitable organizations such as SANZAF. Fundraising is indeed an art which should extract maximum benefit, both for the donor and especially the recipient. In this instance SANZAF being the recipient and the public supporters being the donors. In true style SANZAF had its Food and Health Fair at the premises of the Darul-Islamic High School aimed at raising funds for the Manenberg centre which is earmarked for welfare activities in the Manenberg area and surrounding townships.

Operation Winter Warmth

Although we welcome the winter rains that fill our dams with water, it is also a time of hardship for the thousands of families who do not have adequate shelter from the harsh weather conditions in this season. Every winter SANZAF provides destitute families with food, blankets and clothing to alleviate their suffering.

Operation Qurbani

In addition to Qurbani done locally, SANZAF reaches out to some of the poorest communities in Southern Africa, namely that of Malawi and Mozambique. About four million Muslims in Mozambique and half a million in Malawi benefit from SANZAF's Operation Qurbáni.

Rural poverty in Malawi and Mozambique is deeply entrenched and a major obstacle to their development and growth. They are dependent on foreign aid to shore up their weak economies and overcome food shortages.

Apart from the compelling socio-economic reasons given, the cost of Qurbáni to the donor in Malawi and Mozambique is significantly less than that paid by donors in South Africa.

This cost-effective alternative makes it possible for many more South African Muslims to benefit from the spiritual value of Qurbáni.

Da'wah & Literacy Programmes

SANZAF’s Da’wah and Literacy programmes elevate the poor and needy at a time when they are most likely to become despondent and lacking in confidence to become self-sufficient.

A decline in socio-economic well being is tyically associated with a concomitant decline in spiritual health. Due to the socio-economic situation and lack of employment opportunities the decline in spirituality has reached critical levels. SANZAF’s Da’wah and Qur’án Literacy programmes show that people who are spiritually uplifted, cope better with their problems and have confidence of a better future.

Outreach Programmes

Over three decades of involvement on a community level, SANZAF was compelled to develop a blueprint to reach out and empower communities with the emphasis on children, the aged and families in need of social reconstructive services. Our outreach programmes strive for an infrastructure that would enable SANZAF and other organizations to implement various sustainable projects in areas historically deprived and neglected.

Feeding Schemes

This is an area of grave concern. Nutritional deficiencies have affected our communities causing the current socio-economic inherent problems beyond the border of the Western Cape. SANZAF’s programmes, since inception, has included the support of community feeding schemes and the distribution of essential foods to destitute and needy families.
