SANZAF's work continues

The sacred month of Muharram provides us with an opportunity to enter into our social responsibility with renewed resolve to address the issues of poverty and suffering of those around us.

Even though SANZAF has excelled in achieving new milestones such as winning the Islamic Finance Business Awards in the category Corporate Social Investment and the unprecedented national income and distribution for the year ending August 2007, these milestones can be truly meaningful only if we remain focused on the quality of our core activity.

SANZAF invites you to continue supporting the organisation and to help monitor its levels of accountability and transparency.

MUHARRAM ... is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and as its name suggests, started from the time our beloved Nabi Muhammad's (SAW) migration from Makkah to Medina. Among the days of this auspicious month, the 10th of Muharram has a sanctity of its own.

Commemoration of 10th Muharram

How did Nabi Muhammad (SAW) commemorate the 10th of Muharram

The 10th of Muharram was observed as a day of fasting by the Quraish in the time of Jahiliyah (ignorance). The Prophet (SAW) used to observe this fast.

When the Prophet (SAW) entered Medina, he found the people of the Book fasting and honouring the 10th of Muharram. He said unto them:

What is this day you are fasting?” They replied: “this is a great day. On this day, Allah saved Nabi Moosa (AS) and his people and drowned Firoun and his men. In thanks to Allah, did Nabi Moosa (AS) fast on this day.” So the Prophet (SAW) said unto them: “we are nearer in duty to follow Nabi Moosa (AS).”

It was the Prophets custom to imitate all good deeds and practices. He then fasted on this day and ordered his followers to do likewise. He stressed this practice that even the children of Medina fasted on this day.

Fasting during the month of Muharram

There are 3 formats of Fasting which can be observed during Muharram

Fasting for 3 consecutive days: 9th, 10th and 11th of Muharram

Fasting for 2 days, either the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th Muharram

Operation Fitrah report back

SANZAF’s Operation Fitrah in conjunction with 65  Masajid and organisations saw the distribution of Id parcels and clothing to almost 10,000 destitute and needy families. An equivalent amount of Id food parcels were allocated and distributed. SANZAF expresses its gratitude to all the parties who contributed to the success of the operation. By working together duplication was eliminated.

Our beloved Nabi Muhammad (pbuh) is reported to have said;"Prevent them (the   poor and needy) from begging on this day (the day of Id )."

Iftár Programme report back

SANZAF also hosted Iftár programmes attended by a total number of 1200 adults and children from the Masjid at Lost City on the 21 September 2007, the Al Jaamia Uthmania Masjid in Bonteheuwel on 28 September 2007 and Masjidul Izza in Bishop Lavis on 05 October 2007. We say shukran to all our dedicated volunteers, and to every soul who contributed financially or materially, may Allah accept your good deeds and reward you abundantly, Insha-Allah!

Operation Qurbani report back

Our Operation Qurbani in Malawi and Mozambique was successfully completed, Alhamdulillah.

SANZAF Representatives from around the country travelled to the heart of the poor to perform this sacred act. One of our regions had an excellent experience with its local Qurbani, having performed it in several townships. The difference this year was that they took the donors with them and this had several advantages, including exposing them to the areas in which SANZAF operates, helping to bridge the divide between donor and recipients

  Education & Empowerment Project

The Education and empowerment project in the Western Cape has shown remarkable growth since inception in 1985. This bursary project was aimed at empowering and assisting needy students, and has subsequently developed into one of SANZAF's leading projects.

Questions and answers

Question 1: What is the meaning of Nisáb?

Nisáb is a minimum amount of wealth which makes one liable to pay Zakáh. The person who possesses an amount equal to or greater than this specified minimum wealth, which remains in his or her possession for a period of one year is considered wealthy enough to pay the Zakáh.

How to calculate Nisáb
Step 1: Determine the current value of silver per ounce                                       Step 2:  Record the value of silver per ounce
Step 3:  Multiply the value of silver per ounce x 21

Example
Step 1:  Determine the current value of silver per ounce
Step 2:  The value of silver = R 125.69 per ounce
Step 3:  R 125.69 x 21 = R2,639.49

Therefore, at Wednesday 16 January 2008 (07 Muharram 1429) the Nisáb = R2,639.49
